Hospital Serves Up Room Service

Daytona Beach, FL (August 7, 2009)---

A three cheese omelet, roast beef au jus and grilled salmon aren’t typical fare at most hospitals. However, a new dining experience at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center has patients feeling as if they are enjoying meals in a fine hotel rather than a hospital. Room service at Florida Hospital Memorial, or 5 Star Dining as it is known internally, features a tasty array for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for patients—making it the only hospital in Volusia or Flagler counties to offer this service.

“Even though this seems like a luxury, there are health benefits as well,” says Todd Owens, Food and Nutritional Services manager. “5 Star Dining gives our patients the opportunity to eat things they like most, when they are hungry, and eating well usually has a positive effect on recovery.”

Launched in July, the service is available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and offers a variety of choices including freshly made omelets, pancakes, hot and cold sandwiches, salads, soups, pizzas, pastas and desserts.

Patients receive a menu upon admission after their physician has informed Food and Nutrition Services of the dietary plan, including any restrictions. They may place orders by contacting the room service call center directly from their hospital room. A nutrition assistant reviews the order to ensure the choices are appropriate for the patient’s personal dietary needs and, if necessary, helps make alternate selections. Meals are delivered bedside within 45 minutes.

“The whole effort is aimed at being patient-friendly and offering superior service to our patients,” added Owens.
