Ormond Beach, FL (April 20, 2009) --- Board certified in pediatric neonatal-perinatal medicine, Alan de Klerk, MD, neonatologist, joins Florida Hospital Ormond Memorial’s (FHOM) BirthCare Center, where he will focus specifically on the care, development and diseases of newborn infants.
Dr. de Klerk brings a diverse background with more than 10 years professional experience in neonatology to FHOM, less than 90 days before the hospital moves into a new state-of-the-art facility in Daytona Beach. He comes to FHOM from Moanalua Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Additionally, he has practiced in New Zealand, New York and Melbourne, Florida.
“I look forward to developing an advanced neonatal program for Florida Hospital,” Dr. de Klerk said, who cites great beaches, friendly people, and an “outstanding professional opportunity” as reasons he and his family are delighted to move to Ormond Beach.
Dr. de Klerk completed his medical school training and initial internship at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. He then began post-graduate pediatric training in New Zealand before completing his pediatric residency and neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at Babies and Children's Hospital, part of Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, in New York.
Dr. de Klerk has presented internationally on many topics in neonatal medicine, principally on his primary area of interest, respiratory support of the critically ill newborn. Additionally, he has been published in Pediatrics, Pediatric Neurology, Advances in Neonatal Care and the Journal of Pediatric Surgery to name a few.
FHOM is excited to bring Dr. de Klerk onboard, who will be available 24/7 for newborn assessments and consultations. FHOM is also actively recruiting for a second neonatologist to join Dr. de Klerk to further enhance the neonatal program.
